Major High Street Retail

Major high street retail markets can be a significant challenge for managed network providers.

How to deliver a competitively priced selection of services to a large number of end points in a cost-effective manner is often the problem.

A typical major retail project consists of a large number of sites, requiring secure network connectivity for retail applications, VoIP or converged services that need little or no technical expertise on site.

In this environment, the Virtual Access Zero Touch provisioning methodology offers service providers substantial business benefits.

The Zero Touch centralised provisioning process means that CPE appliances, IP handsets and LAN switches can all be cost-effectively installed by our nationwide team of technical couriers. This removes the need for costly, trained technical staff to be involved in the process.

Alternately, the appliance and additional equipment such as cables and VoIP telephones can all be shipped as a single package with a set of site-specific instructions. The customer simply plugs in the cables, and the system centrally configures the service.

To further tailor the service for retail markets, we offer a range of important optional features such as:

  • Automated WAN backup via PSTN or 3G connection providing prioritisation for key applications during failover mode.
  • Historical reporting of WAN services
  • VoIP call quality measurement
  • Virtual Router Redundancy (VRRP) services for high availability environments.

Corporate Teleworking

Benefits

Teleworking

Corporations, enterprises and public sector departments are demanding solutions for home-based working employees. Apart from fulfilling legislative requirements, these facilities offer the business benefits of distributed working as well as accommodating the work/life balance needs of their employees.

The Virtual Access teleworking solution is based upon the TW4000 series Service Managed Gateway (SMG) appliance. The TW4000 addresses a number of key security issues with home-based access to corporate resources as well as providing an effective solution for voice and data integration:

  • Strong user authentication
  • Separate family and teleworker WAN access routes
  • Secure encrypted corporate access

Security

Companies need to provide simple, secure access to their networks for home-based employees without compromising network security. The TW4000 SMG addresses two aspects of security: data privacy and strong authentication.
Data privacy is achieved by providing an IPSec 3 Des encrypted tunnel from a PC attached to the commuter port of the SMG. The IPSec tunnel is provisioned and managed centrally, simplifying the tasks of setup, in-service management and support.

Before the IPSec VPN tunnel can open to the company network, two authentication tests must be passed.

  • MAC address filtering provides the first level of authentication. Only a pre-registered PC can obtain an IP address and connect to the commuter port of the SMG.
  • Radius provides the second level of authentication. The TW4000 SMG supports the 802.11x protocol, which enables a radius challenge to be extended from the company’s radius servers to the remote user over the broadband connection.

Family Internet Access

Family Internet access creates many security issues for a teleworking solution. The TW4000 SMG includes LAN segmentation, which provides separate, secure family access over the same broadband connection as the corporate PC through the dedicated ‘family’ port on the SMG.

Voice and Data Integration

Finally, Clearway™ VoIP QoS management enables high quality VoIP on standard ADSL circuits in conjunction with concurrent data access. Integrating voice with data access over a single broadband connection provides a significant business benefit because it reduces the hidden potential costs of mobile telephony by integrating IP telephony systems and high quality VoIP.

IP-Centrex

Delivering IP-Centrex services requires a complex, end-to-end solution, from the IP softswitch to the IP VoIP telephones. Our solutions are ideally suited to deployment, management and reporting services issues at each level of an IP-Centrex solution.

At the customer site, the network appliance can monitor the local LAN, and provide connectivity information on VoIP handsets, for either periodic reports or network alerts.

Our network appliance, the Service Managed Gateway (SMG), sits on the interface between the broadband or MPLS network and the customer LAN. The SMG is uniquely positioned to do the following:

  • Provide a view of both the LAN and the broadband service
  • Automatically enable circuit backup via ISDN or modem
  • Manage and prioritise VoIP and data over non-QoS network, using Clearway™ traffic management
  • Appropriately mark VoIP packets for QoS compatibility with network-based QoS services in conjunction with MPLS networks
  • Locally implement Call Admission Control (CAC) to block excessive outgoing VoIP calls and therefore maintain the required voice quality
  • Provide VoIP call quality measurement reports and statistics for SIP-based services

Our polling services can produce critical statistics instantaneously or as periodic reports on issues such as latency, jitter, and availability.

Finally, the Zero Touch process simplifies the deployment of a complex IP-Centrex solution. The network appliance and additional equipment such as cables and VoIP telephones can all be shipped as a single package with a set of site-specific instructions. The customer just plugs in the cables, and the system centrally configures the service.

IP-PBX Telephony Services

Virtual Access CPE technology is also very well suited for IP-PBX services. In these situations the VA router acts as the IP gateway to the WAN for remote handset access, distributed satellite working or IP trunking services. Where SIP-based IP-PBX configurations are used the key features offered are much the same as with IP-Centrex VoIP environments.

Many IP-PBX configurations use propietary signalling however, and incorporate the rich features of the manufacturers proprietary handsets.

In situations where Internet access brodband services are used with proprietary signalling, the VA router offers some further key benefits. In these situations, centralised configuration of GRE or IPSec VPN tunnelling simplifies the process of IP handset address management.

At the customer site, the network appliance can monitor the local IP-PBX interface and provide connectivity information on both broadband and LAN for either periodic reports or network alerts.

In summary, the Service Managed Gateway (SMG) offers:

  • Clearway™ traffic management to manage and prioritise VoIP and data over the non-QoS network;
  • Appropriately marks VoIP packets for QoS compatibility with network-based QoS services in conjunction with MPLS networks
  • Locally implements Call Admission Control (CAC) to block excessive outgoing VoIP calls and therefore maintain the required voice quality
  • Provides VoIP call quality measurement reports and statistics for SIP-based services

Our polling services can produce critical statistics instantaneously or as periodic reports on issues such as latency, jitter, and availability.

Finally, the Zero Touch process requires no expertise to install the customer premises equipment (CPE). The network appliance and additional equipment such as cables and VoIP telephones can all be shipped as a single package with a set of site-specific instructions. The customer just plugs in the cables and Activator configures the service.

Financial Transactions

Virtual Access' solution enables network operators to maintain financial POS service without disruption to the end- customers’ service and allows the customer to offer new services for the future.

Financial

Financial

The Virtual architecture allows network operators to migrate a customer’s service to IP without affecting service. Our solution provides an equivalent functionality to that provided by the existing network. It consists of three components:

  • Service Managed Gateway CPE (SMG)
  • Activator: a zero touch management system,
  • and optionally, the AOS for X.25 service

Key Benefits

  • Reduced transaction charges
  • Reduced transaction times due to the fast connect modem
  • Future proof: IP services can share the same line
  • Faster problem resolution using an always-on connection
  • Increased reliability using backup interface options
  • No investment – i.e. no need to change equipment or processes
  • Security using SSL or IPSec
