X.25, ISDN, leased line, and Frame Relay networks are being phased out by operators worldwide. Users of these networks include utilities companies, financial institutions, lottery, security companies and traffic organisations. Operators and equipment manufacturers plan to discontinue support for these legacy networks to focus on IP. However, many users find it difficult to upgrade or replace their equipment to support IP. Virtual Access NGN migration products solve this problem by allowing operators to turn off legacy networks without requiring the user to upgrade or replace their equipment.

The solution consists of three components:

  • The SMG which is based in the customer's premises and emulates the legacy network interface
  • Activator management system, and
  • the Always-On Server, which is located in the central office for network aggregation

The three components are unified by the Virtual Access Zero Touch technology which is proven to reduce deployment and operational costs.

Financial Transactions

Financial

The Virtual Access SMG enables ATM, POS, and other financial transaction operators to connect dial-based equipment to ADSL, GPRS, 3G, and Ethernet-based Wide Area Network (WAN) eliminating the cost of dedicated dial lines, enhancing reliability, and speeding up transactions.

Security

Security Monitor

security

Security companies responsible for alarm and security monitoring use devices such as low-speed alarm monitoring, remote sensors and dial-back to call alarm centres. There is a large installed base of equipment using technologies such as serial, ISDN, PSTN and X.25.

Many operators are looking to turn off these legacy networks. Migrating all the remote customers to new IP equipment is costly and disruptive. Virtual Access offers a solution that means operators can switch off older networks without stranding their customers.

Utilities

Utilities companies such as water monitoring and management, gas, oil and electricity use Remote Telemetry Units for monitoring equipment, power, water levels, temperature and various parameters of systems used for supervisory, control and data acquisition purposes. These devices have sensors and control equipment connecting back to a management control centre via serial, low-speed telephony. Networks used to carry this information are being discontinued and need to be replaced without disruption to service. Virtual Access NGN migration solutions solve this problem by emulating the legacy network interface and transporting the data over IP.

Telecommunications Operators

Telecommunications

Telcoms

Legacy networks such as X.25 and interfaces such as serial are still in use by many operators to control their switches, plant and property management systems.

Virtual Access provides a solution that allows operators to turn off the older networks and use IP without having to replace or upgrade the existing equipment.

Traffic

Many transport authorities control their traffic signals and variable message signs over legacy networks often using proprietary protocols. Virtual Access offers a solution that allows operators to migrate the traffic systems from the legacy networks to IP without replacing the existing equipment. This means that operators can turn off older networks such as analog leased lines and the traffic authority gets the benefit of a fully supported IP-based network for the future.
