Where can I find help on Subscriber configuration commands?

The online help in Activator has the most comprehensive documentation on the Subscriber configuration commands.


  1. Log in to Activator.
  2. Select Tools > AOS Subscriber Management > Subscriber Management > Search / Modify / Delete.
  3. Choose any Subscriber from the search list.
  4. Click the Help button, labelled ‘?’, to display the help page that describes the Subscriber configuration commands.

How can I diagnose the cause of a failed connection attempt?

Turn on Fault Finding features on AOS Manager.

  1. Connect to the AOS Manager.
  2. Click the Layer 1 entity in the Layer 1 pane.
  3. Click Config.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Select the boxes Log VC Clear and Log Subscriber.
  6. Close both dialog boxes.
  7. Attempt to establish the connection and monitor the event log in AOS Manager. Extra diagnostics are displayed which might identify the cause of failure. Turn off these diagnostics after you use them because they impact on AOS performance.

What is the recommended number of AODI connnections on an E1 timeslot?

It is recommended that no more than 130 Subscribers are configured on a single 64kbps timeslot.

How can I correctly configure Line Trace to correctly decode X.75 packets?

Before you start a Line Trace, toggle the X.25 Decode button so that it displays ‘X.75 Decode’

How do I check that the AOS is running a supported version of AOS software ?

  • Connect to the AOS Manager
  • Select Settings > Unit Configuration.
  • Check the contents of the Build text field. If there is a suffix ‘(IC)’, the AOS is running an inconsistent set of software modules. The ‘IC’ suffix means ‘Inconsistent’.

I have locked myself out of Activator, what can I do?

Contact your Activator administrator. The administrator will unlock your account.

Contact your Activator administrator. The administrator will reset your password and notify you when you can log in again.

How do I configure the Service Managed Gateway?

After you physically install the Service Managed Gateway (SMG), it should download the basic configuration automatically.

To configure features of the SMG:

  1. In the URL field of a web browser, type the address of the SMG. If you do not know the address of your SMG, contact your reseller or support team.
  2. On the SMG homepage, click Fast.Start. Follow the instructions in the Fast.Start wizard.

To configure advanced features of the SMG:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
  3. In the Expert View menu, select the folder of the option that you want to configure.
  4. Open the Expert Web Full Reference Documentation or the user guide for the option that you want to configure.
  5. Follow the instructions in the documentation to configure the option.

How do I change a configuration file?

You can store up to three configuration files in flash memory. You can upload a configuration through the SMG web.

To upload a configuration to the SMG:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
  3. In the Expert View menu, select configuration files > upload from router.
  4. On the Configuration File Upload page, click the option that you need to use.

How can I diagnose problems with the SMG?

The SMG has diagnostic applets, logs, and utilities that help you debug and diagnose problems. To view the applets, logs, and utilities, click these options on the SMG homepage:

Open the applet, log, or utility that you need to debug or diagnose the problem.

How do I download new firmware to the SMG?

To download new firmware to the SMG, the SMG must have a valid license key with a support agreement.

If the SMG does not have a valid license key, contact your reseller or support team.

The LinXpeed Pro and GW3000 do not require license keys.

What is a license key?

A license key is a digital permit containing support agreement information. You must install the license key to download new firmware to the Service Managed Gateway.

The license key also contains information about some advanced features that may not be available as standard, such as Clearway and firewall logging .

How can I use tracing to obtain more information about a device?

To find the trace analyzer:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Diagnostics > Trace Analyzer.
  3. In the pop up window, click on the box beside the event text to select the event to monitor.
  4. If the desired event is not shown in the main window, click SELECT .
  5. Choose from the list of events shown.
  6. Click the event you need.

To qualify events with a text string, type the text string in the event filter edit field.
Use the comparators ! (NOT), & (AND), | (OR) to filter by multiple strings. For example, to show IP events with ICMP|TCP in the event text, select IP events and type ICMP or TCP in the event field.
You must select Start Trace to start the applet.

What is content filtering?

The content filter is a URL-based web filter that validates a requested URL against a database of categorised sites. Use predefined filtering rules to allow or block categiories of web content.

To configure the content filter:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
  3. In the Expert View menu, select System > Content Filtering.

You need a valid feature key before you can use this feature.

How do I use the SMG scripting language?

You use the Service Managed Gateway scripting language to create custom scripts to run repetitive test and operations. Several default scripts are built into the firmware as standard. The backup script enables the SMG to switch to a backup interface when the primary connection is down.

To configure custom scripts with the script editor:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
  3. In the Expert View menu, select System > Scripts.

To configure custom scripts with the script editor:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Expert View menu, selcet System > Scheduler.

You can also start custom scripts via the command line.

How can I use firewall logging to track traffic flow?

In addition to the standard firewall, the GW4000 and GW5000 devices come with an enhanced firewall logging feature that will log attempted traffic flows and actual traffic flows through the Service Managed Gateway.
It can be configured on either a system-wide and per interface basis.

To configure the firewall logging feature:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
  3. In the Expert View menu, select System > Security > Firewall Log.

To configure on a per interface basis:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
  3. In the Expert View menu, click Interfaces > ppp-x > ip > Firewall Log.

The firewall log feature also allows for manual or automatic upload of the log, depending on the configuration.

How can I prioritise a particular type of traffic for QoS?

Quality of Service capabilities allow you to prioritise, police and shape traffic as required. Virtual Routes qualify the traffic and send to Diffserv Queues, which provide the prioritisation and shaping rules.

To configure virtual routes:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
  3. In the Expert View menu, select System > Filters.

To configure diffserv queues:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced.
  2. In the Advanced menu, click Expert View.
  3. In the Expert View menu, select System > diffserv.

To find statistics about your virtual routes, including hit counters:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced > Expert View.
  2. In the top menu bar, click Operations.
  3. In the operations menu, click performance > filter stats.

To find statistics about your diffserv queues:

  1. On the SMG homepage, click Advanced > Expert View.
  2. In the top menu bar, click Operations.
  3. In the operations menu, click performance > diffserv stats.
