Security companies responsible for alarm and security monitoring use devices such as low-speed alarm monitoring, remote sensors and dial-back to call alarm centres. There is a large installed base of equipment using technologies such as serial, ISDN, PSTN and X.25.
Many operators are looking to turn off these legacy networks and move their customers to IP lines such as ADSL, 3G, and V.90. Operators need a way to provide services over IP without replacing all their vast numbers of remote site existing equipment. Migrating all the remote customers to new IP equipment is costly and disruptive.
